The "K" family are from Sri Lanka.

When these phogotraphs were taken in 2005, they were failed asylum seekers. Since then they have been granted refugee status.

A successful businessman in his homeland, LK as an asylum seeker was frustrated by not being able to control his life while his asylum claim was being processed. Being an active volunteer in his community is a way for him to regain control, and partake in meaningful work.

The biggest challenge for LK as an asylum seeker was to keep busy, to keep his mind active. The alternative was to simply wait for a knock on the door if immigration came to take him and his family away. Instead, L chose to continue to involve himself in the community.
